Victoria, BC – The University of Victoria women's basketball team was defeated 67-53 by the University of British Columbia on February 6, at CARSA Performance Gym.
Becker led Victoria to a first-half lead.
- The defence reigned supreme in the first quarter as both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm. As buckets began to fall, each team traded makes with the quarter ending 11-10 with UBC on top.
- The Vikes began to pour it on, creating opportunities off forced turnovers, building up their largest lead as the Thunderbirds trailed 29-19 with three minutes remaining in the half.
- Victoria's success was in large part due to Abigail Becker, as she began to put on a show. She found success in the paint, scoring 10 points and grabbing 5 rebounds in the first half.
- UBC closed the scoring gap in the first half as the Vikes headed to the locker room with a 30-26 lead.
Thunderbirds charged in the third, creating fourth-quarter drama.
- UBC came out and attacked in the third quarter, finding their range and success in the fast break. This success erased the Vikes' lead and allowed the T-Birds to jump on top 46-41.
- Avery Geddes and Makena Anderson were finding success in the mid-range, but their offensive push was not enough to overtake the Thunderbirds.
Notables
- With the loss, the Vikes fall to 9-10, while the Thunderbirds improve to 15-4.
- Abigail Becker's 12 points and eight rebounds led the team in scoring and on the glass.
The Vikes will return tomorrow, February 7, for their annual seniors' night game to mark the last regular season game at CARSA Performance Gym.
