Coming off an injury that kept him on the sidelines for the majority of last season, Vikes men’s rugby veteran Phil Mack has since been unstoppable, helping bring the Vikes to fourth place in the BCRU standings. Playing in just three games for the Vikes this season, Mack has scored 23 points, including 4 tries and a drop goal. He is currently sixth in Premier League standings for total points scored. Both coaches and players of opposing teams often take note of Mack’s skill and in a recent match-up against perennially tough Burnaby Lake RC coaches cited him as “the difference maker” and “the heart of everything the Vikes did well.” Mack is well-known as one of the most dangerous players in the league, both on offense and on defense.
In addition to his success with the Vikes, Phil was once again named to Canada’s sevens team, who recently put in a good showing at the Gold Coast Sevens tournament, the first leg of nine in the RBC Sevens World Series circuit. Mack scored 23 points and though Canada went 1-2 against top international competition, Mack led the way with superb off-loading and conversion kicking. Mack was also selected to play for Canada in upcoming test matches against New Zealand and Samoa this fall however, as a student athlete, he turned down the opportunity to focus on his studies.
