VICTORIA - Hot on the heels of
announcing the roster for World Cup 3 in Lucerne Switzerland, Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) has released the selections for a number of upcoming international regattas including the U-23 Canadian team, U-21 Canadian team and those selected to compete at the International University Sports Federation (FISU) games.
Spread throughout the world and taking place from late July to late August, ten members of the Vikes men's and women's rowing programs earned the right to represent Canada at these prestigious international events based on their performances at the 2018 Speed Orders – National Team Trials event from June 21-30 in London, Ontario.
"We're excited for the squad of athletes selected for racing opportunities this summer," said Adam Parfitt, RCA Director, Coach and Athlete Pathways. "It's a mix of returning champions and athletes new to international racing. Athletes went through a vigorous week of selection to earn their spots on this list and it's our hope that future Olympians and World Champions will emerge."
The largest Vikes contingent of the summer will be at the World Rowing U-23 Championships in Poznan, Poland taking place from July 25-29.
Avalon Wasteneys will have a quick turnaround from competing at World Cup 3 for the senior team from July 13-15, to sitting in the women's eight in Poland. Teammate
McKenna Simpson, who has spent three years with the Vikes, will also be in Poznan, rowing in the coxless pair.
On the men's side
Travis Gronsdahl and coxswain
Skylar Presch will be in the eight, with fourth-year Vikes
Mathew Szymanowski and
Lucien Brodeur in the quad. Vikes head coach
Aalbert Van Schothorst will also travel with the U-23 team as a coach.
Two athletes from the Vikes men's program were named to the FISU games squad and will get the opportunity to test themselves against the top university rowers in the world in Shanghai, China from August 10-12.
Both
Tyler Adams and Vikes captain
Daan Arscott will row in the four. They will be joined in China by Van Schothorst and former Vikes women's head coach
Rick Crawley.
Rounding out the busy international summer will be a trio of Vikes that were named to the Canadian U-21 team that will compete at the Trans-Tasman Series from Aug. 23-25 in Karapiro, New Zealand.
Second-year
Sarah Craven and first-year
Piper Battersby will be joined by Adams who will compete at both the FISU games and in New Zealand. All three will row in multiple boats throughout the regatta.
Those ten rowers will bring more than 25 years of experience with the Vikes into their respective competitions and combined to capture five gold medals at the Western Canadian University Rowing Championships and two gold, one silver and one bronze at the Canadian University Rowing Championships in the 2017-18 season.
World Rowing Under 23 Championships – July 25-29 - Poznan, Poland
World Rowing Junior Championships – August 8-12 - Racice, Czech Republic
FISU World University Championships – August 10-12 - Shanghai, China
U21 Trans-Tasman Series – August 23-25 – Karapiro, New Zealand
In support of Next Gen athletes, RCA has launched the 2018
#RCANextGen fundraising campaign to reduce fees associated with international competition. For the second year running, RCA aims to ensure that athletes do not face financial barriers to represent Canada on the world stage. Last year, Canadians generously contributed to the campaign, and raised over $37,000 for two NextGen teams. In 2018, we have expanded to support these five outstanding Next Gen teams.
