Burlington, Iowa – Following two days of competition, the University of Victoria men's and women's golf teams swept the Continental Athletic Conference Golf Championship team titles while
John Morrow won the men's individual title at the Burlington Golf Club, May 2-3. With the team victories, the Vikes have secured their places at the NAIA Golf Championships later this month.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Day 1
- The Vikes finished the first day of play holding the top spots in both the team and individual categories.
- As a team, the women finished the first round at 322 (+34), holding a 21-stroke lead over second place.
- Playing 36 holes on the first day, the men's side finished the day -3, putting up rounds of 293 and 280 to hold a 78-stroke lead after day one.
- Individually, Sukriti Harjai held the top spot in the women's field, finishing the first round with a score of 75 (+3).
- Tying for third, Mirai Hayashi and Katie Martens each carded 80 (+8) over the first 18 holes.
- Leading the men's field, John Morrow fired back-to-back under-par rounds on the first day of competition, finishing the day at -5 with scores of 71 and 68 over the first two rounds.
- The Vikes' men's side finished day one holding spots one-through-five on the individual leaderboard. After Morrow was Robin Conlan, who ended -1 with rounds of 74 and 69, followed by Zach Ryujin in third place with rounds of 76 and 68 to finish even.
- Rounding out the top-five were Aiden Craig-Steele and Chase Basanta, who finished +4 (73, 75) and +8 (75, 77), respectively.
Day 2
- Recording a final round of 74 (+2), John Morrow claimed the men's individual title at -3 overall.
- Sukriti Harjai finished two rounds tied for first at +13 overall, recording a second-round 82 (+10). However, Harjai fell in the playoff, taking second overall individually.
- Claiming three of the top five individual finishes on the women's side, Mirai Hayashi finished third at +16 with two rounds of 80, while Kathleen Hodgson finished in a tie for fourth place at +18 (87, 75) in addition to Harjai's second-place finish.
- The men's side held their first-through-fifth positions on the individual leaderboard through the final round. Following Morrow was Robin Conlan, who shot a 71 (-1) in the final round to finish the tournament -2 and in second place, and Zach Ryujin at +2 (76, 68, 74) in third place.
- Chase Basanta took fourth overall with a +6 for the tournament after rounds of 75, 77, and 70, while Aiden Craig-Steele logged a 77 (+5) final round, finishing +9 overall and in fifth place.
- Katie Martens took sixth overall on the women's side with a +20 (80, 84), while Mackenzie Scott finished 11th with rounds of 90 and 87 for +33 overall.
- Finishing in first place as teams, the men finished the tournament -2, recording the only under-par finish by a team, while the women finished +67.
- Guiding the Vikes to two banners, head coach Justin Clews was named the CAC Coach of the Year on both the men's and women's side.
UP NEXT
Having secured bids to the NAIA National Championships, the men will head to Silvis, Ill. to compete at TPC Deere Run, May 17-20, while the women will head to Lincoln Park West Golf Course in Oklahoma City, Okla. for nationals, May 24-27.
