Victoria, BC – The University of Victoria men's rugby team went on the road and stunned the Westshore RFC 38-17 in the quarterfinals of the British Columbia Premier League playoffs.
Westshore broke through first.
- It didn't take long for the scoring to start as Westshore broke the tryline first, breaking the scoreless tie and seizing the first lead. With a successful conversion, Westshore propelled themselves in front 7-0 five minutes into play.
Vikes' offensive pressure paid off.
- For nearly fifteen minutes, the Vikes applied immense pressure deep into the Westshore half. Sion Griffiths found an open lane and broke through to get the Vikes on the board with a long run for a try. Cooper Coats executed the conversion to bring the game even at seven apiece.
- Sion Griffiths added to his explosive half as his size and speed proved too much for the Westshore backline. Griffiths capped off a gritty run, touching the ball down beneath the Westshore goalposts. Cooper Coats converted the short kick and made it a 14-7 lead for the Vikes.
Westshore battled back for a late first-half try.
- After being on their heels for most of the first half, Westshore found some momentum that allowed them to find the try zone for the second time in the first half. A missed conversion allowed the Vikes to hold on to a 14-12 lead.
Vikes cap off their impressive half with two more scores to extend their lead.
- The Vikes responded to Westshore's increased pressure. Sully Curran finished off a physical drive by scoring a try, pushing the Vikes' lead to 19-12.
- Before the bench could stop celebrating Curran's score, Cooper Coats intercepted a Westshore pass and sprinted the length of the field for a fifth Vikes score in the half. Cooper's try had the lower-seeded Vikes leading 24-12 and silenced Westshore's home supporters.
The second half started the same way the first ended.
- Ryder Heaney-Corns opened the second half with a powerful run right through the heart of the Westshore defence. Ryder's score, paired with Coats' conversion, had the Vikes leading 31-12.
Westshore looked to make a comeback.
- Westshore began to fight back, looking to close the scoring gap as they found their way to the try zone to cut into the Vikes 31-17 lead.
Cooper Coats picked off another for the dagger.
- Cooper Coats picked off another Westshore pass, kicked it the length of the field, and tracked it down in the try zone to put the game to an end with the Vikes securing the massive 38-17 win.
With the victory, the Vikes have earned themselves a spot in the BC Premier League semifinals and will play on Saturday, May 2, at 2:30 p.m.
