Six Shooters net win in the Wild West

VICTORIA - A total of six scorers reached double digits in the UVic Vikes women's basketball team's come-from-behind 77-75 win over the Memorial Sea-Hawks.

Six Vikes players touched double figures in a balanced scoring attack that yielded their best offensive output of the pre-season. #Kayla Dykstra# led all scorers with 16 points, shooting 8-9. #Vanessa Forstbauer# and #Carmen Lapthorne# each contributed 13, #Debbie Yeboah# netted 11, and #Jane Anholt# and #Sarah Semeniuk# also scored 10 apiece.

"We showed a little more depth to our offence today," said head coach Brian Cheng. "We played some tough games this weekend, but our team found a way to get it done under any circumstance."

On Sunday, the Vikes needed to overcome a seven-point deficit fourth quarter deficit to wrap-up the Guy Vetrie Memorial Tournament with a perfect 3-0 record. Memorial led 73-69 with four minutes remaining, but the Vikes ended the game on an 11-2 run while forcing the Sea-Hawks to miss seven of their last eight shot attempts.

Memorial was the Atlantic conference runners-up last season and led for the betterment of the second half after the two sides were tied 40-40 at the break. Brittany Dalton and Lauren Hawkins combined to lead the Sea-Hawks in scoring with 14 points apiece.

The Vikes owned a 38-31 advantage on the glass, which included 14 from Forstbauer. The fourth year forward from Chilliwack totaled eight 'boards on the offensive end, and her total of 14 represents a new career high.

The Vikes finish the pre-season with a 4-1 record and will now prepare to host the defending CIS Champion Simon Fraser Clan in next Saturday's conference opener. The Vikes were the only team in Canada to defeat the Clan last season. Tip off is 6 p.m.
