Third quarter lapse costs Vikes opener in Regina

Feb. 25: Regina 66 UVic 55 (Cougars lead best-of-three Canada West quarter-final series 1-0)

The University of Victoria Vikes women's basketball team's hopes of playing spoiler in Game 1 of the best-of-three Canada West quarter-final series in Regina ended in the third quarter when they were outscored 22-9 en route to a 66-55 loss.

Game 2 of the series will be played Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. PST in Regina. If necessary, Game 3 will be played on Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. PST.

A 9-0 Regina run to open up the third quarter gave the host Cougars control, allowing them to take a 40-33 lead. They led 53-42 entering the fourth quarter.

Carmen Lapthorne led the Vikes with eight points and four rebounds, while Jessica Renfrew had seven points, all in the opening quarter. Debbie Yeboah had a team-high 13 points.

Danielle Schmidt led the Lady Cougars with 15 points, eight rebounds and seven steals.
