Freshman post
Dalyce Emmerson of Prince Albert, Sask., was terrific for the Huskies with 22 points and 14 rebounds, especially effective in scoring from the free-throw line going 12-for-14. She also forced UVic forward #
Sarah Semeniuk# of Fruitvale, B.C., into early foul trouble and eventually contributed to Semeniuk's fouling out before the midway point of the fourth quarter. She played just 18 minutes in the game and was held to two points and three rebounds.
In fact, the Vikes played with their bigs in foul trouble for much of the night with #
Natalie Janssens# of Surrey, B.C., picking up all three of her personal fouls in the first half as well. In all the two posts played just 34 minutes and scored just six points.
#
Chelsea McMullen# of Prince George was effective in the paint with a tireless, physical performance for the Vikes, leading the team with 15 points and a great second-effort night with a number of her points off second chances and two offensive boards for nine rebounds overall. #
Debbie Yeboah# of Winnipeg also had 15 points for the Vikes - a number midway through the game to keep UVic in front.
UVic falls to 5-4 and hosts the No. 7 ranked Alberta Pandas on Saturday Jan. 7 at 5 p.m. at Ken & Kathy Shields Court at McKinnon Gymnasium. Saskatchewan improves to 5-3 on the season and faces UBC on Saturday in Vancouver.
On Friday night in front of over 500 fans, the Vikes led 21-18 and 32-28 at the half, thanks in large part to McMullen's work int he paint. But the Vikes had no answer for the Huskies and their strong post-play in the second half. Saskatchewan used their fifth-year experience to hold UVic to just six fourth-quarter points to pull off the win.
The game featured 13 lead changes and relatively good defence as both teams were held to under 36 per cent shooting on the night.
Fifth-year Saskatchewan guard Katie Miyazaki of Richmond, B.C., netted 16 points and added seven rebounds in the win for the Huskies which had just six players score on the night.
