Vikes women look to extend win streak at Thompson Rivers

Jan. 25-26: UVic Vikes women at Thompson Rivers (Kamloops, BC)

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes women's basketball team have moved up to No. 8 on the CIS Top 10 coaches polls after an undefeated weekend at home and a big win over the then-ranked No. 2 Regina Cougars. Looking to stretch their current four-game winning streak, the Vikes will travel to Kamloops, Jan. 25-26, for a pair of games against Thompson Rivers.

FULL SCHEDULE  /  ROSTER

In a weekend that saw the No. 1 Fraser Valley and No. 2 Regina teams fall, the Vikes grabbed four points to extend their record to 10-4 to chase the coat tails of Pacific division leaders Fraser Valley, Thompson Rivers and UBC.

This past weekend, senior Debbie Yeboah led the Vikes in scoring with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds in the 61-58 win over Regina and 17 points in the 74-49 victory over Brandon.

Despite some steady performances from the Vikes usual top scorers of Jessica RenfrewCassandra Goodis and Chelsea McMullen, it was the unusual suspects on the Vikes rosters who had stellar performances this past weekend.

Rookie Tessla Rennie stormed the court with 15 points and scored the winning bucket in the home thriller against the now-ranked No. 3 Cougars. Fellow first-year Jenna Bugiardini made the top-three in scoring for the Vikes in both weekend games and is the only rookie on the starting five.

In addition, every single Vike put up numbers against Brandon, including three-point contributions from Jenny Lewis, Ashley McGinnis, Jenna Krug and Jordyn Newman.

Despite not being in the CIS Top 10, Thompson Rivers are not to be taken lightly, as the 11-4 WolfPack are 6-1 at home and, prior to their Jan. 19 loss to Saskatchewan, were on an eight-game undefeated streak. Out for redemption, Thompson Rivers will be led by six-foot-three Diane Schuetze, a former CIS second team All-Canadian. Schuetze averages 19.1 points-per-game and 12.1 rebounds-per-game.

The Vikes will face the WolfpPack on Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. and Jan. 26 at 5 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live at http://UVic.canadawest.tv
