VICTORIA, B.C. - The University of Victoria Vikes women's basketball team finished their three-game Ontario road series with one win and two losses. Jenna Bugiardini was the leading Vikes scorer in all three games, Oct. 17-19, against each of McMaster, Western and Ryerson. The Vikes found were downed by the Marauders (72-42), defeated the Mustangs (80-71) but suffered their second pre-season loss (80-64) to the Rams.

This is the final pre-season test for the Vikes who begin their 2014-15 CIS campaign with a double header against Regina on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

Following their fourth-straight win, 72-42, over McMaster, the Vikes went on to drop the Western Mustangs thanks to a 17-point performance for Hamilton, Ont. native Bugiardini. Fifth-year Vike Jessica Renfrew put up 17 points in only her second game this season after returning from an injury in September.

"We shot the ball really well early on but it was definitely a game of runs," described Dani Sinclair, Vikes head coach. "(Western) got the score to within two, 39-37, in the second quarter but we hit a couple of big threes to extend our lead to 11 at half time."

Bugiardini, a former CIS All-Rookie team member, showed her strengths in both ends of the court and dominating in scoring from all areas of the floor. 

"We were a bit sluggish (against McMaster) because it was an 11 a.m. game after travelling and it was also Jess' first game in awhile," added Sinclair about Renfrew, one of two fifth years on the team. "(Renfrew) found her legs (against Western) and played and shot the ball really well. We also had some great contributions from Shaylyn Crisp, Cassandra Goodis and Amira Giannattasio and Emily Jentsch off the bench."

In their final match up of the series, the Vikes had one low-scoring quarter that resulted in a 80-64 loss to Ryerson. The Rams scored an even 20 points in each quarter, while the Vikes were on par in all but the third, being out-scored 20-7. Bugiardini lead Victoria with 18 points, all from the field, while Renfrew had 14 points and was good on two perimeter shots. Crisp also added nine points and six rebounds, while the Vikes conceded 21 turnovers to Ryerson's 11.

The Rams were lead by Maria Nunes and Sofia Paska who finished with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

The Vikes will return home to prepare or their Canada West openers against Regina on Oct. 31 (6 p.m.) and Nov. 1 (5 p.m.). Both games will be broadcast with live web video and stats at http://uvic.canadawest.tv.
