Vikes resume Canada West action after two-week break, visit No. 6 Huskies

Nov. 21-22: Victoria Vikes at Saskatchewan (5:15 p.m. – Saskatoon, Sask.)

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes women's basketball team are back in action this weekend, Nov. 21-22, following a two-week break. The Vikes will visit the CIS No. 6-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies for a two-game road swing at the Physical Activity Complex in Saskatoon, Sask.

These will be the final 2014 home games for the Huskies, who are currently 2-2, the same record as the Vikes. Overall Saskatchewan has a 9-3 record against Victoria since 2004 and last season the Huskies won 73-45 in their only match up.

"After a few weekends you know what you need to work on and it was nice to have two full weeks of practice to do that," said Dani Sinclair, head coach of the Vikes women's basketball team. "The reality in this conference is you can't have an off night and you need to make sure everyone gets going right from the start."

The Vikes are led by third year Jenna Bugiardini who has been averaging 18.8 points-per-game, while rookie Amira Giannattasio has a shooting percentage of 55 per cent from beyond the arc to average 9.8 point-per-game. Fifth year Cassandra Goodis has been the most well rounded, averaging eight points and nine assists per game.

"We still need more toughness," added Sinclair, whose team lost in the dying moments to No. 2 UBC, 63-60, on Nov. 7 and then against 71-48 on Nov. 8. "The new format of double headers has been good for us and the teams we are playing show us what we're made of early on. You have to force your will a bit to be successful and when you're on the road you just take it one game at a time."

The Huskies are backed by the reigning conference Player of the Year Dalyce Emmerson, as well as CIS-transfer Laura Dally.

"She's got a lot of good players around her," added Sinclair about the six-foot-three Emmerson. "It's not just about to taking her out of the game. They shoot the ball well as a team and are tough at both ends of the court."

The Huskies started the season with back-to-back losses to Alberta but rebounded for a pair of wins over Winnipeg last weekend

The Vikes and Huskies will play at 5:15 p.m. Pacific at the PAC in Saskatoon on both Nov. 21 and 22. Games will be broadcast live at canadawest.tv.
