VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes women's basketball team enter their final regular season weekend of play for 2015 with four straight losses. Despite the current 1-5 Canada west record the young Vikes will have a good opportunity to bounce back with a pair of road games this weekend, Nov. 27-28, in Lethbridge. The Pronghorns (0-4) are also looking to find the win column on the young season as the Victoria and Lethbridge are in the bottom half of the Pioneers Division.
Last weekend, Nov. 20-21, the Vikes conceded a pair of losses to a senior laden Calgary Dinos contingent losing 81-72 and 84-72 on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Despite the losses the Vikes, who have no fifth year players, just three fourth years and five new players. Vikes head coach
Dani Sinclair has identified a lack of consistency defensively; however, some bright lights have appeared from last weekend's losses.
With injury to
Kristy Gallagher in the Nov. 21 game, rookie
Avery Snider stepped in well to play 38 minutes, while posting 21 points, four assists and four rebounds. The usual suspects of
Jenna Bugiardini,
Nicole Karstein and
Amira Giannattasio did most of the offensive damage for Victoria, while the entire team is still building up their depth. Giannattasio and Karstein are currently tied for 18
th in conference scoring, both averaging 13.8 points per game, while Bugiardini is 11
th in the Canada West for rebounding, currently averaging 7.8 per game.
Lethbridge are also short on veterans, with no fourth or fifth year players and six third year players . Pronghorns head coach Dave Adams has had offensive leadership from rookie guard Katie Keith, second year Danielle Fritzke and third year Zoe Dahl. Keith and Fritzke lead the 'Horns averaging 9.8 and 9.3 points per game, respectively. Keith also leads the team defensively as the five-foot-eleven Lethbridge native currently averages a team high 7.8 rebounds per game.
Last weekend, Nov. 20-21, the Pronghorns fell in back-to-back games to the nationally ranked Regina Cougars and the week before conceded losses to the Brandon Bobcats. With two games in hand the young 'Horns will be hoping to test their talents against another young side in the Vikes.
Following this weekend's pair of games both teams will break before New Year competition resumes Jan. 8-9.
