Golf crowned national champions, national runners-up at Canadian University/College Championships

Komoka, Ont. - The University of Victoria men's golf team captured the 2023 Canadian University/College Championship national title while the Vikes women's golf team finished as national runners-up at the tournament, May 29-June 2 at FireRock Golf Course.

ROUNDS 1 & 2 RECAP

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Securing the national championship title by 13 strokes, the Vikes men fired combined under-par rounds of 283 and 278 in the final two rounds to finish -14 as a team in first place.
  • Maintaining their second-place position, the Vikes women finished as the national runners-up with a +57 overall mark for second place as a team.
  • The national title is the fourth in program history for the Vikes men's golf program (2003, 2005, 2006, 2023), and first for the Vikes under head coach Justin Clews, who was a member of the Vikes' 2003 national championship team as a student-athlete.
  • Posting top-five individual finishes on the men's side, Liam Mosher finished in second place at -9 overall (72, 68, 72, 67), while Zach Ryujin climbed four spots in the final round to finish tied for fourth with an overall mark of -3 (74, 72, 69, 70).
  • Leading the Vikes' women's field was Sukriti Harjai, who ended her Vikes career with a fifth-place individual finish at +11 overall (78, 71, 76, 78).
  • Also concluding his Vikes career was Robin Conlan, firing an overall -2 (69, 73, 74, 70) to take seventh place in his final tournament as a Vike.
  • Posting a top-10 individual finish in her Vikes debut, Cindy Koira took ninth place at +17 (76, 77, 76, 80).
  • Mirai Hayashi tied for 19th overall at +32 (86, 74, 85, 79), while Kathleen Hodgson rounded out the Vikes' women's side with an overall +28 (83, 84, 80) over three rounds.
  • Taking 31st and tying for 39th, Aiden Craig-Steele and Chase Basanta finished the tournament +13 (75, 70, 77, 79) and +19 (88, 76, 72, 71), respectively.
  • Three Vikes earned All-Canadian honours as top-five individual finishers: Harjai, Mosher, and Ryujin. Harjai earns the title for the second time in her career (2019), while the accolade marks the first for Mosher and Ryujin in their respective careers. All three were named NAIA All-Americans in May.
THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH JUSTIN CLEWS
"I was really proud of the guys on the back nine today. They pressed pretty hard, and our game plan today was to play aggressive. We only had a one-shot lead coming in, but 17-under is doable here as Fraser Valley did yesterday. The guys deserve it, they work really hard, they were really motivated. It's a huge accomplishment for our program and I'm stoked to see '2023' get added to the championship banner in CARSA."

UP NEXT
The Vikes have concluded the 2022-23 season, and will return to action in the fall of 2023.
