Women's basketball opens Canada West tournament against Lethbridge

VICTORIA - The 10th-seeded University of Victoria women's basketball team opens Canada West playoff tournament action against the seven seed University of Lethbridge, Feb. 21 at the UFV Athletic Centre.

NEWS & NOTES
  • The Vikes enter the Canada West playoff tournament on a six-game win streak, sweeping their final series against MacEwan, Brandon, and Thompson Rivers to end the regular season with a 10-10 overall record and secure the 10th seed in the Canada West playoffs.
  • Lethbridge comes in to the tournament at 12-8 on the year, taking the seventh seed in the tournament. The Pronghorns have lost their last four games, falling in two games to Calgary and two games against Alberta, Jan. 26-Feb. 10.
  • The Vikes and Pronghorns last matched up Nov. 4-5, 2022 during the Canada West regular season. Splitting the series, Lethbridge took game one, 72-71, while Victoria won game two, 71-69, in Lethbridge.
  • Victoria will feature two newly-minted Canada West All-Stars in the postseason tournament: third team honouree Abigail Becker and all-rookie selection Makena Anderson, marking the first conference honours for both players.
  • One of the top field goal shooters in the league, Becker finished the regular season ranked second in Canada West with 58.0% field goal shooting, making a team-high 116 field goals on the year, and also led the Vikes with a 14.8 points per game average, good for ninth in Canada West.
  • Anderson played in all 20 regular season games for the Vikes, making 16 starts, averaging 9.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game and tallying 37 steals and 29 assists in 24.1 minutes per game on the floor.
  • Tana Pankratz leads the Vikes in rebounding, averaging 7.1 per game. She also ranks second on the team with a 14.1 points per game average.
  • The Vikes will make the program's 11th-straight playoff appearance at the tournament, having been playoff eligible every year since 2012-13. Victoria will also be in search of their first playoff win since the 2019-20 season, a 69-49 win over Regina, Feb. 14, 2022.
