Women's basketball faces Lethbridge in Canada West Play-in

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria women's basketball team enters the Canada West playoffs as the sixth seed in the tournament, and will take on #11 University of Lethbridge in the play-in round, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. MT.

LAST 5 MEETINGS
  • The Vikes are 2-3 against the Pronghorns in the last five meetings between the two sides.
  • Matching up twice this season, the shorthanded Vikes fell in both games to Lethbridge, 64-58 and 66-60, Jan. 31-Feb. 1 on the road.
  • The Vikes and Pronghorns met in the play-in round of the Canada West playoffs one season ago, with the Vikes taking the 54-43 win to advance to the quarterfinals.
NEWS & NOTES
  • The Vikes enter the postseason with a 12-8 record after closing the Canada West slate with a split series at UBC Okanagan, Feb. 14-15. Victoria finished third in the pacific division standings, resulting in the sixth seed for the tournament. 
  • Lethbridge finished the season with a 10-10 overall mark, good for sixth in the Canada West prairie division and the 11th overall seed. The Pronghorns won both games against Winnipeg in their final regular season action, Feb. 14-15.
  • The top four tournament seeds host the play-in and quarterfinal rounds. The Vikes and Pronghorns will play on third seed University of Alberta's court for the play-in round, with the winner taking on the Pandas on Feb. 22 in the quarterfinals. 
  • Victoria's Friday night win over UBCO (Feb. 14) was the Vikes' 12th win of the season in conference play, marking the most for the program under head coach Carrie Watts in Canada West action.
  • During the 2024 playoffs, the 10th-seeded Vikes advanced to the bronze medal game. Victoria defeated the #7 Pronghorns in the play-in round, 54-43, then upset #2 UBC, 66-63 to advance to the semifinals. The Vikes fell in the semifinals to #6 Alberta, 68-49, and in the bronze medal game to #4 UFV, 62-41.
  • Abigail Becker leads the Vikes in scoring and rebounding, averaging a double-double at 13.8 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.
  • Tana Pankratz and Mimi Sigue are also averaging double-digit scoring for the Vikes at 13.8 points and 11.8 rebounds per game, respectively. Sigue and Karis de Paiva are also top rebounders for Victoria, holding respective 7.4 and 6.5 rebounds per game averages.
