Greg Streppel, originally from Cambridge, Ont., swam for the Vikes from 1986-1990 and is considered one of the greatest marathon swimmers in history. Streppel won 11 World Cup races and the 1994 gold medal in the 25-km open water world championship in Rome, Italy. He also competed at the 1991 World Championships in Perth, Australia.

Swimming for the Vikes for four years, Streppel has won five CIAU championship medals for the program.

As one of the greatest long distance swimmers, he won the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in 1993 and 1995 as a marathon swimmer. In 1996 Greg was inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame and in 2009 was inducted into the Swimming Canada Circle of Excellence. 


UVic Achievements 
-  Swam for the Vikes from 1986-1990
-  Won five medals at the CIAU Championships (silver, four bronze)
-  Helped lead the Vikes to three straight third-place finishes at the CIAU National Championships

International Achievements 
-  Considered one of the greatest marathon swimmers of all time
-  Won every FINA open water race he entered between 1992-95; and won 13 of the last 16 races of his career
-  1988 World University Games finished sixth in the 1500-m freestyle, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
-  1991 World Championship participant in Perth, Australia 
-  1994 World Championship gold medalist in 25km open water in Rome, Italy
-  1990 to 1995 Canadian marathon champion 
-  Won 11 World Cup marathon races

-  1995 honoured as the Tim Turow Cambridge Athlete of the Year  
-  Inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame 1996
