Mark Wyatt was a member of the Vikes rugby team from 1982-87, graduating from UVic with a bachelor’s degree in education. Wyatt returned to the university to complete a diploma from the National Coaching Institute (1993) and a Masters degree in Coaching Studies (1996).

During his years with the Vikes, Wyatt played predominantly full back but spent time at outside half. He was named UVic’s Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year in 1986 and he went on to become one of the best kickers in the history of the sport in Canada with his ability to kick with either foot.

Wyatt played for the Canadian National Team for ten years (1981-91), during which he participated in two World Cups.  He was captain of the team from 1988-91 and he led them to their best-ever performance at a World Cup in 1991 with a 26-0 quarter-final victory over Scotland.

Wyatt set a Canadian record in 1987 against Ireland when he scored 21 points, including a 6-for-6 penalty kick performance. In 1991 against Scotland, Wyatt set a world record of eight penalty kicks goals. 

Wyatt is a two-time winner of the Victoria Male Athlete of the Year, a member of the Victoria Sports Hall of Fame and was identified as one of the top 100 Athletes of the Century (1900’s) for Victoria.
