CATEGORY: Team
The 1984 UVic women’s field hockey team captured the CIAU championship. It was UVic’s first of 11 national championships (so far) in a sport previously dominated by the University of Toronto, York and UBC.
Although there were many skilled individuals in the line-up, the 1984 team captured gold because of the power of teamwork. They played with heart and passion, for and with one another, setting the standard that all other Vikettes/Vikes field hockey players have since tried to emulate.
During the 1984 season head coach Sandy Drever guided the Vikettes to an undefeated season. The Vikettes scored 41 goals and allowed only two against. Sara Brant (Ballantyne), Nancy Mollenhauer (Charlton), Susan Bond, Anne Evamy and Eiko Tabata were named Canada West All-Stars. At the national championships in Vancouver, the Vikettes defeated Waterloo, Saint Mary's, UBC and York University berthing them to their first championship. Mollenhauer, Tabata and Ballantyne were named Tournament All-Stars.
The motto ‘success breeds success’ appears to be true in the case of the field hockey program. In 2002 the program had won 10 championships making it the most successful program in any Canadian university sport.
