Cross-country and track stand out Silverado Socrates, formerly Brenda Shackleton, is arguably one of the most accomplished runners to have raced under the Vikes name.

Under the tutelage of head coach Ron Bowker, Socrates competed from 1985-1988 for the UVic cross-country and track program. Socrates amassed three consecutive CIAU cross-country championship titles (1985, 1986, 1987) and won the Canadian national cross-country championship in 1987, running in the senior women’s division.

Previous to running for the Vikes, Socrates set the Canadian Junior 3000-metre record of 9:12.84, still unbroken today, and in her first year with the Vikes helped the team to a CIS title, earning All-Canadian status along the way. In 1986, Socrates was awarded UVic’s Rookie of the Year Award and named the CIS cross-country Athlete of the Year.

In her sophomore year, Socrates once again led the team to another CIAU title as she was crowned the CIAU cross-country champion and named the CIAU Cross-Country Athlete of the Year for the second season in a row. In track, Socrates won the gold in the 1500-m and bronze in the 1000-m and for the second time, earned All-Canadian status.

In her final season of competition with the Vikes, Socrates raced to become the 1987 CIAU cross-country champion for an incredible third year in a row, helping the Vikes to another team title and again, earning All-Canadian honours. In track, Socrates won CIS gold in the 3000-m and was named the 1988 CIS Track Athlete of the Year. Closing out her varsity career, Socrates was named UVic’s Outstanding Athlete of the Year.
